Multiplex cinemas with tons of screens may be impressive in size but there’s something about independent ones that keeps the old-timey vibe of going to the movies. Even with modern amenities, there’s a sense of familiarity with these places that make it very enjoyable.
Reel Cinemas is one of the independent cinema operators in the UK that’s making quite a splash for their approach in creating movie houses. While other cinema companies impress their moviegoers by their structures’ sheer size, Reel provides entertainment without requiring a large footprint. As a result, they get to offer the same things as the biggest chains in the country but with a different vibe altogether.
Noted as one of the biggest independent cinema chains in the UK with 76 screens in 15 sites, Reel Cinemas is continuously growing. Its diverse portfolio and rather different approach to development ensure that they will not cease to provide quality entertainment anytime soon.

Quick History
An interesting thing about a lot of cinema chains in the UK is that many started out as an effort to revive or sustain a historical movie house. From there, they discovered their knack in running such establishments and so their portfolios inevitably grew. This is the case with Reel Cinemas.
The chain started out with the Curzon Cinema in Loughborough in Leicestershire which traces its roots back to 1914. What stands now is already a product of continuous development over the years but it doesn’t mean that it’s not notable or historic in itself. In fact, its details are rather noteworthy.
The original cinema was opened as the Empire Picture House in 1914 and showed moving pictures and hosted variety shows. It was created to seat 1000 viewers and had a cafe in the building. They also served tea and biscuits for free to patrons.
In 1929, the first renovation took place with the design of architect Francis C. Haynes. In 1935, a new auditorium was added and redesigned in the Art Deco style by well-known cinema designer and architect Archibald Hurley Robinson. The old one was retired upon the completion of the addition which now seats 1663 patrons. It was then renamed to New Empire Cinema and opened with a new ballroom and a cinema.
In 1953, the cinema was sold to the Essoldo chain which started a few changes of hands and renaming. It was called the Essoldo, Curzon, Classic, and then Curzon again which stuck until it was acquired by Reel Cinemas in 2001. Reel was just starting out then so they took on the name of the Curzon before they renamed their operations as Reel Cinemas in 2005.
In 2011, the Curzon was taken over by Odeon Cinemas and is now known as the Odeon Loughborough. Reel Cinemas has already grown so much at this point and has a number of multiplexes in its portfolio. They even got to acquire former Odeon cinemas along the way.
Special Offers
One of the most notable things about Reel Cinemas is that they are not out to draw you in with the fanciest and most advanced technologies in cinema. They do show 3D movies but they mostly work with digital 2D to ensure top-notch quality pictures. This promises a more classic experience without compromising picture and sound definition.
If you’re worried about your comfort, there’s nothing to fret about. They have excellent seats but you can also upgrade to their Premiere and Reel Lounge to amp up your movie experience.
Reel Cinemas are also catering to those who wish to stay at home instead. They have the Reeload which will let patrons watch films and musical performances in the comfort of their own living rooms. They also have a Video on Demand service.
Reel Cinemas Prices
It’s hard to argue against the fact that Reel Cinemas prices are some of the best there is. They offer excellent deals in seeing the latest films on the big screen as their tickets cost a fraction of the price of their competitors. They have Super Saver deals, family deals, and special prices for key workers in the NHS, Armed Forces, and other Emergency Services.
