Quick History

Compared to other homegrown movie theatre chains in the UK, Vue’s history isn’t as embedded in the local cinema culture. They’re actually more of an international enterprise from the get-go.

Founded in 1999 as the Spean Bridge Cinemas, the first site opened in 2000 under the Circuit Cinema brand in Scotland. A little later, they renamed the company SBC International Cinemas as they also opened cinemas in Faro, Portugal and Taipei, Taiwan. The sites in Faro were later closed in 2014.

In 2003, they were already operating four cinemas and then acquired Warner Village Cinemas which had 36 cinemas. This was also the time they changed their name into Vue Entertainment. Two years later, they then acquired the  Ster Century cinema chain, followed by the Apollo Cinemas and Multikino around a decade later.

Among their most noted achievements include the acquisition of highest grossing cinema in the United Kingdom or Ireland (Dublin’s Liffey Valley Shopping Centre) and the construction of Britain’s first eSports arena (the Vue Gfinity Arena).

As of 2021, Vue has about 225 locations in Europe and Taiwan. They also run six divisions under the Vue International brand.

Special Offers

With a multinational operation, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Vue has a rather different approach to their movie business compared to other British cinema chains. Looking at their offers, they seem to address the most pressing concerns that plague the movie theatre industry.

For starters, they have affordable ticket prices. Lots of people in other parts of the globe have been shying away from going to the movies because of rising costs so Vue addresses this issue by keeping their tickets affordable.

Despite this, they don’t skimp on their offerings. Their theatres provide different kinds of experiences so moviegoers can take a pick from several options. They have IMAX and 3D screens for a more immersive movie experience. They have 4K and Xtreme screens for higher definition and larger than life viewing. They also have the Vue Scene which will let you enjoy first-class accommodations at their special cinemas.

What should be noted, however, is that Vue offers recliner seats without having to upgrade your ticket. Other chains will charge extra for these special seats but Vue equipped select theatres with these furnishings to offer better movie experience. Those who want an upgrade can still do so with the VIP seating.

Vue Cinema Prices

There’s a bit of disconnect when it comes to the topic of Vue Cinema prices. Some say that it’s cheaper than competitors while others do not agree. This can bring a bit of confusion but all statements have some truth to them.

For starters, like with other cinema chains, Vue Cinema charges slightly different ticket prices at different sites. The variance isn’t very big, however, as the chain standardized their pricing in most locations a couple of years back.

This change was brought on by a mild controversy in 2019 where outrage over the pricing difference between the Carmarthen location was significantly higher than what is charged in Cardiff. The pricing received a lot of backlash at the time as locals believed that it drove people to other places instead of going to the movies locally. It was not good for the town, they argued.

The rates were changed once the campaign gained quite a bit of public attention. It was a win-win move as it helped solidify the brand’s reputation as one of the best movie theatre chains that offer luxury with a budget-friendly price tag.

Vue Cinemas prices are also extra competitive because they allow customers to bring non-alcoholic beverages and cold food into their movie theatres. While their concession stands offer pricey food which is fairly common in cinemas, moviegoers have the option to cut costs by bringing in their own food instead.
